Following her all the way to Monterrey, photographer and curator Laura Álvarez presents her exhibition “An Empire of Illusions”. With a deep look into the drag scene in her hometown we see the nightlife, dressing rooms, and finally: Showtime. This breath-taking work details (in seamless narrative) the uprising of freedom and entertainment that is taking place in this small town in the north of Mexico. For, while within these walls the culture of drag is celebrated, outside it is yet to be accepted or understood.
The magic, light and beauty of the drag world is portrayed here in this black and white series which questions whether or not we’re ready to accept changes to the roles often dictated by gender. If we are to eventually achieve this acceptance, Laura wonders whether it could lead to a society where gender is no longer questioned at all.
